Prince William and Prince Harry still get very emotional when they talk about their late mother, Princess Diana. However, when they were teenagers, it was hard for the brothers to deal with their parents’ divorce.
Prince William was affected the most, as he is the eldest son of Diana and Charles. As a boy, he had a very special bond with his mother, but as the documentary reveals, William didn’t speak with Diana for several days after he found out the truth about her affair.
Hidden secrets of the royal family
When the parents get divorced, their kids are usually the ones who suffer most. When Princess Diana and Prince Charles announced their split in 1995, they were most concerned about how their sons would handle the news.
In an interview with BBC’s Martin Bashir, Diana told how horrible she felt when she was talking to her 13-year-old son William about his father’s affair.
Diana told the news to her son in a very delicate manner, which probably affected his further relationships. Diana told William:
If you find someone you love in life, you must hang onto it and look after it. And if you are lucky enough to find someone who loves you, then you must protect it.
A bitter truth was too much for little Prince William
At that time, there were many rumors circling around Diana and Charles’ split concerning infidelity on both sides. After her candid interview with BBC, Diana reportedly regretted only about one thing, and that was her relationship with James Hewitt.
James Hewitt is a former cavalry officer in the British Army. Hewitt retired from the Army after 17 years of service. At that time, the rumors emerged that he had been having a five-year affair with Princess Diana.
Although their affair remained a secret to the public for several years, in royal circles it was widely known. Prince Charles reportedly knew of his wife’s affair but didn’t care much, because he himself was involved in the romantic relationships with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
In 2017, William and Harry have filmed a series of documentaries to mark the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death.
According to the royal family documentary My Mother Diana, when 13-year-old William found out about Diana’s bond with Hewitt, he didn’t speak to his mother for a few days. It’s easy to understand William, as it was too much stress and dark secrets for the boy of his age.
Nevertheless, time heals even the deepest wounds. Now, both brothers are grownups, but they always remember Diana as the best mother they had and try to commemorate her deeds and life through different means.
